10 Questions with … Nusy Hussain
GB Development Squad member and 12 year old climber

Thank you to Nusy for letting us interview her at the 2019 Open Youth Lead Championships at The Big Depot, Leeds.

Who you are and what do you do?

I’m Nusaybah Hussain and I’m a climber in the GB team. I got in this year and I’ve been to a lot of national and a few international competitions.

What was your first climbing experience?

We went on holiday to Canada and we tried it there and I was like, okay I really want to do this. When I got back home they [my parents] put me into NICAS and I got selected for the academy and then I got selected for another team and then GB team.

How did you know that climbing was your thing?

I’m not sure, it just kind of clicked. I always the aspect that there’s always something new; new routes and new holds and that’s kind of cool.

Where is your favourite outdoor climb?

Oh I don’t really do outdoors. Probably from Brimham Rocks, the first place I went to.

What has been your proudest climbing moment?

The Welsh Open in 2018. So, I get quite scared on leading and find it hard to push through but in Wales I pushed through and topped the route. I was so proud of myself.

What are your ambitions?

I want to get more girls into sport. Because I’m half Asian as well so a lot of my cousins don’t do sport because it’s deemed quite a boy thing and I just want to show that girls can do it as well as boys.

Lead, Speed or Boulder and Why?

Lead I think. Lead because I find even though I m scared of it, I am better at it and I think I like it more, I’m more confident, even though I am scared. But speed is really fun as well.

What are your most liked and hated healthy foods?

I love pizza and sushi. I absolutely hate brussel sprouts, they are the most disgusting thing in the world.

If not climbing, what sport would you be doing?

Probably netball or something.

Give us an inspiring quote (either yours or someone else’s).

I don’t actually know who said this by “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”.
