Former British Champion, Competition Climber and Battle of Britain 2018 winner
Thank you to Dave for letting us interview him at the Battle of Britain 2018 at The Depot, Manchester.
Who you are and what do you do?
I’ve been climbing since before I can remember, so like 3 or 4 years old. Mainly trad climbing with my dad when I was younger and then stated competing when I came to university at Manchester. Just kind of got the bug, expensive bug. I still do outdoor climbing, sport climbing, not so much trad anymore.
What was your first climbing experience?
I wish I could remember that. I really wish I could have the story but my Mum and Dad have got pictures of my clambering up a boulder in Llanberis Pass as a baby in nappies, but I can’t remember that. I just remember climbing with my dad but I can’t remember the very first time.
How did you know that climbing was your thing?
Because I’ve just always done it and it’s quite addictive. I just like the challenge of it, the physical and the mental and tactical challenge of it.
Where is your favourite outdoor climb?
Oh, so hard. I live in Yorkshire so I love a load of the Yorkshire Grit. I live 10 minutes from the Earl Crag, something like Lager, Lager, Lager, that’s really nice problem. Or Caley as well, like Zooyork that’s one I like to go and do regularly.
What has been your proudest climbing moment?
Standing on the podium of the World Championship in 2009.
What are your ambitions?
Keep going and not break. Hopefully get into the Olympics next year but it’s a bit of a long shot.
Lead, Speed or Boulder and Why?
Probably boulder but I think lead’s a close second. Speed I’m getting faster but it’s not my thing (laughs).
What are your most liked and hated healthy foods?
Hate broccoli, love avocado.
If not climbing, what sport would you be doing?
Probably mountain biking.
